Looks nice, but the 253 series (the previous Narita Express rolling stock) was only 18 years old. That's not very old for rail vehicles -- they could have very well been retired prematurely.

Anyone here has personal experience with train-spotting in Japan? I might be visiting Tokyo in July or August, and I do plan on spending a day or two at most train-spotting!

I wonder if it has space for your luggage, as none of the other train in Japan do. Which is why you usually send your package by courier, separately.

Rumours suggest that these trains will NOT be retired, but will be used in other services instead (eg Odoriko to Izu-Shimoda). However, it's just a rumour.

The new E259 EMU will feature lockable luggage storage areas. (source: wikipedia) Many airport rail link in Japan have overhead luggage racks, and also luggage compartments near the boarding doors.

You could ask at the Yahoo JR Forum. There are people on the list who have been to Japan and who are now living in Japan. The emphasis is on trains rather than transit, but the two are tied closer together in Japan.

As part of an article on Shinjuku Station in its August 2008 issue, Trains magazine had a side bar on Railfanning Tokyo.

Had the chance to ride this from Narita to Tokyo Station, will post the interior pics I have into this thread soon. It took about an hour or so from the airport. Unfortunately no exterior pics though.

The Japanese rail systems are absolutely amazing!
