I can confirm that the PCC is from Hairspray. It can be seen at the beginning of the movie during the song "Good Morning Baltimore" at 3:13 http://www.youtube.c...h?v=M1chTQ58a1Q

I thought in the past late-night 506 cars went to Dundas West station instead of High Park loop. Later on in the night of course the 306 would likewise go to Dundas West.

Current 506 information says that all 506 cars go to High Park. Mind you, the 506 also is done before 1 AM. So I'm wondering if those 506 Dundas West cars were simply relabelled as 306 Dundas West cars. And if so, when did the switch happen?

It's always been only the overnight cars on Carlton that ran to Dundas West Station. Prior to the 1987 expansion of the blue night network, there was no seperate designation for overnight routes, with daytime numbers, such as 506, staying in use.

No, I think Ed's on to something here.

I don't have any schedules to back it up, but I seem to recall that all cars after 10.30pm or so used to head to Dundas West Station. Something to do with noise complaints on Howard Park in the residential neighbourhoods.

According to the schedules now, that doesn't seem to be the case.

You gotta be kidding me.
And how many years was the Carlton car going down that street?

Mmm, that may be a little different. The CLRVs orignially came with uncushioned steel wheels and made lots of noise and vibrations. You could tell whether it was a PCC or CLRV just by the noise of the wheels on the rails. There were complaints from some homeowners (along Gerrard perhaps) that the passage of CLRVs was making their basement walls crack.

For a while, the policy was that PCCs took over the entire system after about 10 PM to keep down the noise. The complaints were particularly great on quiet residential streets like Howard Park. I remember an operator telling me, "If they don't like the noise, how would they like buses running on Howard Park?" That of course in the days of 6V71-powered buses with no emissions controls.

4047 was the first CRLV equipped with PCC-style cushioned wheels. When was that? I'd have to guess, around 1983 or 1984. Now of course all CLRVs have PCC-style wheels.

Anyone else notice the streetcars seem to be in a very sad state these days?

Yesterday I had two of them break down in a row on my way home. The other day I saw one that had the door duct taped together! Nearly every second one has a problem with the treadle to open the doors!

I can't wait for the new ones to arrive!

Also, whats the deal with replacing Kingston Road cars with Busses for the summer?

Some ALRV's really need to have their rollsign glass cleaned. Some of the ones I saw on Queen yesterday were barely legible, and most weren't legible until pretty close in front.
If I do something out of line, please DO NOT HESITATE to call me out, whether publicly or privately.

Track replacement has been scrap, but too late to change the board. Buses will run as plan.

Out of curiosity, does any one have any news or updates on the status of the new streetcars?

IIRC, this is the third summer that 502 and 503 are being run with shuttles. The first year the construction at Bingham Loop was postponed, it eventually happened last summer.

CLRV in 1978

I remember the old seats they had. I haven't seen that in a long time.

You remember when they had the skewed front seats? When was that?

oh yeah, I remember them too. I remember some GM's had the same seats except the leather was brown. There was also an h4 or h2 that had a small section of the same seats.

The bustitution on Kingston Rd this summer has nothing to do with track replacement. It is due to gas main work (which hasn't started either as far as I can tell).

The right lane southbound/westbound coming up to Queen has been closed for the past few weeks for work
