Standard Gauge railcars were carried over to Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland where the wheel-sets were changed out for narrow gauge ones and off they went across the island. The wheels for a particular car were tagged and returned to that car before it was ferried back to the mainland. The Frederick Carter (first photo) and the John Hamilton Gray carry railcars. The others are passenger/vehicle ferries.

The John Hamilton Gray which also carries passengers and vehicles was being used on the Newfoundland run for the summer......it usually was on the PEI run.

The railway in Newfoundland has been gone since 1988.....but it was an interesting operation while it lasted.

Wow, very sad after the money has dropped a bomb! It's the only Provinces that doesn't have railways running today!

No railways on Prince Edward Island either.......they were abandoned there in 1989. The John Hamilton Gray (photo above) also carried railcars to PEI.

And actually the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador does still have a railway.......Just not on the island: The Quebec North Shore & Labrador run north from Sept-Isle into Labrador. There's also the Wabush Rwy and a new Railway running out of Lab City.

Passenger trains on the QNS&L are operated by Tshiuetin Railway:

Very common in the north.......Most of the airlines there; Canadian North, First Air, Air Inuit are all First Nation owned.
