This route provides service on Sheppard Avenue East between Don Mills Road and Meadowvale Road connecting Don Mills Station, Scarborough Centre Station, Kennedy Station, and northeastern Scarborough. This route operates express making limited stops at major intersections only between Don Mills Station and Morningside Avenue. All stops are served east of Morningside Avenue on Sheppard Avenue, and also east of Scarborough Centre Station. There is one western terminal which is Don Mills Station. Eastern terminals include Kennedy Station for 985A and Meadowvale Road for 985B. Branch 985B only operates during the peak-period on weekdays.

History
- September 2, 1980 - Route introduced as the 85D Sheppard East Express operating between Sheppard Station and Victoria Park.
- March 14, 1983 - Express service expanded to include 85F extension to Meadowvale, 85G to Morningside and 85H to Morningside via Highway 401.
- April 17, 1989 - Branch 85D incorporated into route 10 Van Horne

- February 18, 1990 - 85F and 85G extended east from Don Mills to Victoria Park. Buses operate express west of Victoria Park, stopping only at Don Mills Road.
- May 13, 1991 - 190 City Centre Express established, replaces the 85G and 85H branches, operating between Sheppard and Scarborough Centre stations.
- September 6, 1992 - Route eliminated and replaced by the 85G Sheppard East local buses.
- May 8, 1994 - 85E branch introduced, extending service to Rouge Hill GO Station and 85J branch operates to McCowan heading to Malvern Garage.
- July 28, 1996 - Route made accessible.
- February 1997 - 85J branch discontinued, but as additional 85E trips.
- September 6, 1998 - Route rendered inaccessible east of Brimley on weekdays. Accessible service continues on the 85G and 85J branches.
- March 31, 2002 - 85F Express eliminated, replaced by local buses.
- November 24, 2002 - Route re-introduced as 190 Scarborough Centre Rocket, replacing the local 85G branch.
- August 31, 2003 - New express stop added at Victoria Park Avenue. Rerouted to operate via Sheppard, Midland, Progress, Brimley and Triton.
- November 3, 2003 - New express stops added at Pharmacy Avenue and Allanford Road.
- September 7, 2004 - Weekday early evening and weekend/holiday daytime service is added.
- November 23, 2008 - Moved to Malvern Division.
- June 22, 2014 - New express stop added at Midland Avenue.
- February 15, 2015 - Moved to Eglinton Division.
- February 18, 2018 - New express stop added at Reidmount Avenue to provide a connection to the nearby Agincourt GO Station.
- June 24, 2018 - Moved to Malvern Division.
- September 2, 2018 - With the implementation of the TTC's express network, route 190 was renumbered and renamed into the new 985 Sheppard East Express route. Service to Scarborough Centre Station is denoted by branch 985A and branch 985B is introduced providing service to Meadowvale Road. New express stop added at Brian Drive/Consumers Road.
- March 23, 2020 - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-allocation of service to busier routes, service is suspended until further notice.
- January 3, 2021 - As a result of increasing ridership, weekday-only service is restored. Weekend service remains suspended.
- September 5, 2021 - Weekend service is restored.
- November 21, 2021 - Due to a shortage of operators, weekend service is suspended until further notice.
- May 8, 2022 - All weekend service is restored.
- October 9, 2022 - New express stops added on Triton Road/Brimley Road and Borough Drive/Progress Avenue to serve the relocated temporary GO bus terminal at Scarborough Town Centre.
- January 8, 2023 - Route is modified to operate both ways via Brimley Road and Triton Road to better serve the temporary GO bus terminal at Scarborough Town Centre on Borough Drive.
- March 26, 2023 - Due to construction at Scarborough Centre Station, branch 985A has been extended east to serve McCowan Station, and branch 985D was introduced to operate between Don Mills Station and Centennial College via Scarborough Centre Station to replace the 134C Progress/913 Progress Express.
- May 7, 2023 - In response to ridership changes, weekday midday service will operate on branch 985B to Meadowvale instead of branch 985A.
- September 3, 2023 - With construction within the Scarborough Town Centre bus terminal complete, branch 985D, which provided extended service to Centennial College is discontinued and branch 985A, terminating at Scarborough Town Centre, is restored. Weekday midday service on branch 985B is removed.
- November 19, 2023 - Branch 985A is extended further south to serve as an express bus from Scarborough Centre Station to Kennedy Station as part of the Line 3 Bus Replacement Plan.
Overnight Service
Overnight service is provided by 385 Sheppard East on Sheppard Avenue East between Don Mills Road and Meadowvale Road. The entire portion of the Line 3 Replacement Bus Plan Express Service routing is provided by 343 Kennedy between Kennedy Station and Ellesmere Road. Between Kennedy Rd and Brimley Rd, overnight service is also provided by the 395 York Mills . The rest of the route does not have overnight service, however, this route operates until 1:00 AM every day.
