Historic Branches

History

D40LF #317 on route 77.
D40LFR #1032 on route 77.
LFS #1606 on Yonge Street on route 77.
Brampton Transit Orion V #9969 approaching Bramalea Transit Centre, providing service on route 77.

Route 77 was first operated in conjunction with Vaughan Transit and Brampton Transit along the current route. It was known as 77 Highway 7. It had 3 branches: 77 (via Centre, same as current 77), 77A (via Clark, same as current 77 Sunday routing) and 77E, an express branch. Operation began in April 1990.

  • 2001 - Vaughan Transit was acquired by YRT, and the name was changed to 77 Highway 7-Centre, so to not cause confusion between route 1 Highway 7, formerly operated by Markham Transit, and also to promote the service along Centre Street as well. Service was still operated jointly between Brampton and York Region Transits. On Sundays, buses are rerouted along New Westminster Drive to serve Clark Avenue east to Yonge Street since route 5 does not operate on Sundays. Also, Brampton Transit provided all service during Sundays, even though most of the route is in York Region territory.
  • September 2005 - Viva was introduced along portions of Highway 7 and Centre Street slightly reducing ridership along those portions of the route. Since there was still a gap between Jane Street and Keele Street as well as Viva Orange and Viva Purple serving different locations, service was not as affected as much as Highway 7 east of Yonge Street. Ridership was still very high with riders complaining of overcrowding even during weekends. Because of the long time buses take to make a trip, drivers often issued 3 hour transfers instead of 2 hour transfers, the standard for both YRT and Brampton.
  • August 31, 2008 - A new branch was introduced: 77A. It was an entirely Brampton Transit-operated route that provides direct service between Brampton and York University. It used Queen Street/Highway 7 between Bramalea City Centre and Highway 427, and Highway 407 between Highway 427 and Weston Road. Buses used Keele Street to access the university.
  • September 5, 2010 - With the introduction of Brampton Transit's Züm service brand, route 77 was restructured. Brampton Transit buses no longer operate along the Highway 7 portion of York Region, with this responsibility remaining solely with York Region Transit. YRT buses only operate along Highway 7 to The Gore Road where it loops back to Highway 7 via Zenway Boulevard and Vaughan Valley Boulevard. Branch 77A was taken over by Züm route 501A.
  • February 2012 - Route 77 was declared fully accessible.
  • June 30, 2013 - Route 77 was renamed from "Highway 7-Centre" to "Highway 7", although some destination signs have shown that for a long time.
  • July 14, 2014 - Branch 77A was restarted to maintain service relibility by bypassing the traffic delays along Highway 7 due to the TTC Line 1 Extension and VIVAnext rapidway construction. This branch is primarily geared towards passengers destined or starting west of Jane Street as the branch operates express travelling along Highway 407 between Yonge Street and Jane Street
  • February 2017 - Route 77 was temporary rerouted in February 2017 to service the Highway 7 West Rapidway between Jane Street and Keele Street since there wasn't any Viva route in service on the rapidway. This arrangement ended on December 17, 2017.
  • April 5, 2020 - Due to the completion of the Highway 7 West Rapidway between Bathurst and Centre streets, branch 77A, which operated via Highway 407 between Jane Street and Yonge Street, was eliminated.

Vehicles

Route 77 is primarily a 40ft route, and uses New Flyer D40LF/D40LFR/XD40. Occasionally Van Hool A330 or Nova Bus LFS may provide service.
