The Chicago Transit Authority or CTA is the public transit operator for the City of Chicago. It is operated by the RTA, which also oversees the operation of Pace and Metra.

History

The Chicago Transit Authority began operations in 1947 from the merger of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company and the Chicago Surface Lines.

The CTA acquired Chicago Motor Coach in 1952.

Electric Trolleybus

The CTA ran trolley buses until March 25, 1973. All units were originally purchased by Chicago Surface Lines for its Chicago Railways division and were acquired by CTA upon takeover of CSL on October 1, 1947.
