Cummins ISB
The Cummins ISB is an inline 4- or 6-cylinder diesel engine used in passenger vehicles. The 4-cylinder engine has a displacement of 4.5 litres, and the 6-cylinder engine has a displacement of 6.7 litres. Prior to the update to meet the EPA 2007 and Euro 4 standards, the engine either displaced 3.9 or 5.9 litres.
The Cummins B Series engine was updated in 1998 with four valves per cylinder, Bosch VP44 injection pumps, and new electronics under Cummins' Interact System. The engine was renamed the ISB (for Interact System). The EPA 2010 ISB is known as the ISB6.7 and is only available as a 6-cylinder engine. The ISB outside of North America, known as the ISBe, is still available in 4- or 6-cylinders.
For the 2003 model year, the ISB was introduced with Bosch high pressure common rail fuel injection and increased power output. The EPA 2007 ISB comes standard with a variable geometry turbocharger and active particulate filter. To further reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels to EPA 2010 standards, Cummins employed selective catalytic reduction (SCR), which was already introduced in Europe to meet the Euro 4 standard. The ISB received EPA 2010 certificationon January 8, 2010.
