Detroit Diesel MBE 900
The Detroit Diesel MBE 900 is a 7.2 litre, six cylinder diesel engine used for medium duty trucks and buses. The engine was initinally available in four displacements with four models: MBE904 at 4.3 litres, MBE924 at 4.8 litres, MBE906 at 6.4 litres, and MBE926 at 7.2 litres. The MBE 900 became available only with a 7.2 litre displacement and six cylinders when upgraded for EPA 2007. The engine was designed and built by Mercedes-Benz in Mannheim, Germany hence "MBE" (Mercedes-Benz engine), but production was transfered to Redford, Michigan in 2007. The engine was introduced to the North American market in 1998 in Freightliner companies' vehicles. In 2002, Detroit Diesel worked to provide sales support, servicing, and part support for the MBE 900.[1]
The engine block is of cast iron with five main bearings in the four cylinder model and seven in the six cylinder model. The electronically controlled engine has individually controlled unit injection pumps and three valves per cylinder. The is an optional fourth valve that acts as a decompression valve aiding in braking. High horsepower engine feature a wastegated turbocharger.
The engine met initial EPA and CARB emmissions and had a sixth rating that met Low Emissions Vehicle requirements. To meet the EPA 2004 emission standard, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was added.[2]
The MBE 900 was updated in 2006 to meet the EPA 2007 standard with an optimized water-cooled EGR with a tube-and-shell EGR cooler. The exhaust is then treated by the diesel exhaust catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF). The engine was also updated with DDEC VI electronics.[3] The MBE 900 was not updated to meet the EPA 2010 standards and was discontinued.
