Detroit Diesel Series 92
The Detroit Diesel Series 92 was introduced in 1974 and was a rebored version of its then-popular sister engine (retaining the 5" piston stroke), the Series 71. The Series 92 is a two-stroke cycle, V-block diesel engine, produced with versions ranging from six to 16 cylinders. Among these, the most popular were the V6 and V8 configurations. The V6 engine had a displacement of 9 litres, the V8 had 12.1 litres, V12 had 18.1 litres, and the V16 had 24.1 litres. Each model could be turbochared and aftercooled. This was represented by "TA" in the model name. The engines are ranged from 253 to 400 hp and used DDEC I (starting in 1986) through to DDEC IV electronics.
The Series 92 was popularly used in on-highway vehicle applications. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the Series 92 was used as a major bus engine in North America. It was also available for several other applications: Trucks, motor homes, construction, industrial equipment, military vehicles, and marine applications.
