To continue the 45 foot D-Series legacy, Motor Coach Industries launched the D4505 model. Working with BMW's DesignworksUSA, they restyled the coach with a sleeker front and rear design with bonded type passenger windows. In 2009, MCI customized a D4505 coach for Newton Bus Service with fluted stainless steel sides.[1] Some D4505 coaches have been built with an arear for a destination sign above the windshield. The area resembles the conventional D-Series but is a little smaller. Another customization that so far has only been seen on a 2008 D4505 for Saskatchewan Transportation Company is a "Classic" D-Series lower front fascia.
For coaches meeting the EPA 2007 and 2010 standards, they sport a redesigned rear end incorporating changes to the engine cooling system for each emission standard. Coaches meeting the EPA 2010 standards are also equipped with a selective catalytic reduction system with a 15 gallon diesel exhaust fluid tank.
MCI decided the EPA 2010-compliant D-Series would use the Cummins ISL9 and ISX11.9 engines. As of July 2010, the Detroit Diesel DD13 was under evaluation. All engines are available with the Allison transmission. The ZF transmission will be made available later in 2011.[2]
