Orion Bus Industries 'Orion VI'
Years of manufacture | 1995 to 2004 |
Length | 40 feet |
Width | 102 inches |
Propulsion | Diesel, CNG, Diesel-Electric Hybrid |
The Orion Bus Industries Orion VI (model 06.501) is a fully low floor transit bus. Unlike the later Orion VII, the Orion VI was intended to have no step in the back. The full low floor allowed for easier access and an exit door to be placed at the very rear or centre. The downside to the full low floor design was the rear wheel space became unused. Later models were built with a step up to the rear and centre exit door, which increased seating capacity.
Development began in the early 1990s, and a prototype was first produced in 1993. The Government of Ontario, who owned the bus manufacturer at the time, desired an accessible low-floor bus to be made within the province and sold within the province. The Orion VI was one of the first fully low floor buses built for the North American bus market.
