Toronto Transit Commission 6300-6359
Toronto Transit Commission 6300-6359 were New Flyer D40 buses built and delivered in 1987. They are commonly referred to as D40-87, using the build year to distinguish them from the three other D40 batches built in 1988, 1989, and 1990. They were the first D40s that the TTC purchased since Flyer Industries became New Flyer.
Those buses were originally delivered to Birchmount (6300-6329) and Wilson (6330-6359) garages. Throughout their careers, they were assigned on the routes throughout the system as the ideal candidate for the new ‘shrink wrap’ advertising the TTC was experimenting with at the time. They were delivered with rollsigns and in the 1980s so-called "CLRV" paint scheme with the grey lower portion and higher red mid stripe. Inside, they had the standard cream and brown colour scheme. They would later replace the rollsigns with the Luminator flip-dot destination signs in the early 1990s. The seats inside were the Otaco Model 6468 with padded brown vinyl seat inserts that can accommodate up to 39 passengers.
This series was retired between 1998 and 2000, earlier than the anticipated 18 years. Frame corrosion was much worse than expected, and it was deemed uneconomical to rebuild. Many of these buses went to Future Enterprises in Hamilton for scrap, where some were used as walls around the property for many years after.
The fear of the TTC ending up short buses at this time (due to retirements and corrosion issues) made them start looking for up to 100 viable secondhand GM NewLook buses to rebuild, leading to the acquisition of the ex-Montreal units.
