Toronto Transit Commission 6360-6419, 6530-6559 were Orion 03.501 buses built and delivered between 1987 and 1989. This series of buses was purchased alongside 9530-9564, Orion II buses used on Wheel-Trans.[1] The Orion III was a joint venture between Ikarus of Hungary and Orion Bus Industries of Mississauga, ON. Ikarus provided the frames and body shells of the vehicles, fabricated at their plant in Budapest, and Orion installed the mechanical systems and other components such as windows and interior components at their Mississauga plant.

Part of the decision to buy these buses was a strong political push by the government at the time, with provincial government funding to purchase new buses tied to "buy local" to support local manufacturers such as Orion, who subcontracted the design and building of the body shells out to Ikarus due to their own lack of an articulated model. [2] TTC officials had strong reservations against buying the buses due to concerns about the quality, reliability and durability of the buses, based on reporting from units already operating in Portland and Ottawa, and on-site Ikarus plant visits overseas to inspect the quality of work done. Despite this, an order was placed in December 1986 for 90 of the articulated Orion III model. Orion's bid was the lowest of two bidding manufacturers, and they were (partially) locally built.

Cracks and corrosion developed in the frames and articulated hinges rather quickly due to poor workmanship, materials, and rust proofing.[3] Thus the buses were pulled off the roads en mass several times during their careers. After the first discovery of frame issues in 1995, the TTC placed an order with Orion for 135 Orion V 40 foot long buses, enough to replace the entire fleet of 90 articulated vehicles.[4] These Orion V buses were numbered 7000-7134. Meanwhile, the articulated units kept on the road were inspected frequently for frame and articulated joint issues.

While all of the buses were retired by September 2000, 19 buses were rebuilt and put back into service a year later due to a bus shortage and increasing ridership. The final 19 were retired for good by June 2003. Other units were sold to OC Transpo, where they were rebuilt and lasted until 2003.

When in service, these buses were found on busy routes around the system, including the 39, 53, 106E, 37, and 81. Towards the end of their lives they were confined to Malvern Division, and they provided service on routes 39, 53, 129, and 171 Progress.
