College Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 3 Carlton Street at the intersection of Carlton/College Street and Yonge Street.
History
College Station was built and opened with the original section of the Yonge Subway on March 30, 1954.
Station description
The station architecture is comprised of three levels: street entrance level, an underground concourse level, and platform level. There are a total of three street-level entrances for this subway station and are located at northeast, southeast and southwest corners of the intersection of Carlton/College Street and Yonge Street.
The station walls were originally clad in English Egg Shell Vitrolite but were later covered up with brown shaded tiles with the station name engraved into the tiling. As seen from platform level, two murals (one on each platform) by Charles Pachter titled "Hockey Knights in Canada" are displayed. The murals were created in 1984 when Maple Leafs Garden, located nearby, was the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. The mural on the northbound side depicts hockey players of the Montreal Canadiens while the mural on the southbound platform depicts hockey players of the Toronto Maple Leafs.[1]
The station has no bus terminal so the connection to 97 Yonge and 320 Yonge can be made at the bus stops on Yonge Street and the connection to the 306 Carlton and 506 Carlton streetcars can be made at the streetcar stops on Carlton/College Street. A transfer is required.
Station Improvements
As part of the TTC's Easier Access Program and the Second Exit project, College Station will be made wheelchair accessible and a new second exit/entrance would be constructed to improve customer safety. Elevators and the new second exit/entrance will be integrated within a new concourse that would be constructed just south of the existing concourse. The new concourse will be situated above the tracks with stairs and elevators leading down to the northbound and southbound platforms. A new entrance/exit from the College Park building will lead to this new accessible concourse.[2]
Construction began on November 23, 2020 and the new concourse, elevators, and second exit/entrance are scheduled to be completed at the end of 2023.[3]
