Toronto Transit Commission McCowan Division
McCowan Yard is one of 4 TTC Rapid Transit yards. It is located near McCowan and Ellesmere Rds., just after McCowan RT station. It was opened in 1984, just prior to the official opening of the RT, so it could store the cars before the line's opening.
McCowan Yard is a division of the TTC's Greenwood Yard, with SRT crews primarily being based out of Greenwood, not McCowan.
McCowan can only perform minor maintenence and cleaning; if cars need majore repairs and/or rebuilding, they must be shipped via truck to Greenwood.
A proposed extension to Sheppard Ave. and Markham Rd. would pass through this yard. As well, the amount of cars needed to operate this extension would be too much for McCowan Yard, and instead of expanding the yard, the TTC will opt to replace the yard with a new one near Bellamy Rd., which would also bear the same name. Already, McCowan Yard is at maximum capacity, with no room to expand, while the SRT badly needs a capacity improvement.
