History
- October 19, 2009 to November 21, 2009[1] - Route was split in two in hopes of improving route reliability. The eastern portion ran from Neville Park to Shaw, and the western portion from Long Branch to Parliament. The two sections overlapped for four kilometers between Shaw and Parliament. However the experiment proved a failure, and the route was reverted back to its original form.
- May 10, 2015 - Route is added to the Ten Minute Network with existing service levels between Neville Park Loop and Humber Loop operating at intervals of ten minutes or better whenever the subway is open.
- January 3, 2016 - Ten Minute service is expanded over the entire route. With streetcar service split at Humber Loop to improve service reliability, all streetcar service between Long Branch Loop and Neville Park Loop will now operate at intervals of ten minutes or better whenever the subway is open.
- January 3, 2021 - Route partially operated by buses due to construction at the King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles (KQQR) intersection, TTC trackwork, and overhead upgrades. Streetcars operate as far west as McCaul Loop with replacement bus branches 501L and 501P operating to Long Branch and Park Lawn Loops, respectively.
- March 31, 2021 - Construction commences on the KQQR intersection. Branch 501P is redesignated 501H and is changed to terminate at an off-street loop on the northeast corner of The Queensway and High Street near Humber Loop. Westbound bus branches 501L and 501H divert both ways via Dufferin Street and King Street West.
- October 10, 2021 - Due to overhead upgrades on Queen Street east of Russell Carhouse (Greenwood Avenue), streetcar service will terminate in the east at the carhouse. New temporary bus branch 501N will operate between Lake Shore Garage (Commissioners and Leslie) and Neville Park Loop.
- November 14, 2021 - With the completion of Phase 1 of the KQQR construction project, 501H and 501L buses operate direct along Queen Street West and the diversion via King Street West and Dufferin Street is removed.
- November 21, 2021 - As overhead upgrades along Queen Street East progress, streetcar service is extended in the east from Russell Carhouse to Kingston Road. Temporary 501N bus service now operates between Coxwell Avenue and Neville Park Loop.
- February 13, 2022 - With overhead upgrades on Queen Street East complete, full service is restored between Bathurst Street (Wolsley Loop) and Neville Park Loop.
- May 8, 2022 - Branches 501H and 501L now terminate in the east at University Avenue with eastbound buses designated 501U.
- September 4, 2022 - Streetcar service is extended to Dufferin Street at the Dufferin Gate Loop. Branch 501L is shortened to terminate near Dufferin Street at Queen Street and Gladstone Avenue. Branch 501H is discontinued.
- September 4, 2022 - Streetcar service extended westward from Bathurst Street (Wolsley Loop) to Dufferin Street utilizing Dufferin Gates Loop.
- October 9, 2022 - Service is extended west from Dufferin Street to Roncesvalles Avenue. Streetcars will loop within Roncesvalles Yard until overhead upgrades are complete in Sunnyside Loop.
- January 24, 2023 - Streetcar service will now use Sunnyside Loop as construction within the loop is complete.
- May 1, 2023 - Due to construction on the Ontario Line and work on the Don River Bridge, streetcar service will divert on Dundas Street between McCaul Street and Broadview Avenue. New replacement bus branch 501B will operate between Bathurst Street (Wolsley Loop) and Broadview Avenue, diverting between Bay Street and Church Street. Eastbound service utilizes King Street and westbound service utilizes Richmond Street.
- September 3, 2023 - Streetcar service changed to operate between Sunnyside Loop and McCaul Loop only. No 501 streetcar service will operate on Dundas Street, or provide service east of McCaul Street. Service on Queen Street east of Broadview Avenue to Neville Park will be temporarily served by the extended 505 Dundas streetcar. Replacement buses 501L (Dufferin - Long Branch) and 501B (Bathurst - Broadview & Gerrard) are unchanged.
- September 22, 2023 - New bus branch 501D/513 Queen East is introduced operating between Victoria Street and Neville Park Loop due to Metrolinx construction on the Queen/Degrassi bridge restricting the use of streetcars.
- October 8, 2023 - 501D/513 bus service is converted to the 501D streetcar branch with the reopening of the Queen/Degrassi area to streetcars. Streetcars will operate from King & York to Neville Park Loop via Church Street.

- January 7, 2024 - The eastern looping of the 501B replacement bus service is revised to loop clockwise via Gerrard Street East, St. Matthews Road, and Jack Layton Way. Buses no longer use Dundas Street East and River Street to loop.
- February 18, 2024 - The western terminus of the 501A streetcar is temporarily changed to Dufferin Gate Loop. Service to Humber Loop will be provided by the extended 504B streetcar.
