History

D40LF #903 at Newmarket GO Bus Terminal on route 55.
E-Z Rider II MAX #850 at 404 Town Centre on route 55B.

Newmarket Transit operated route 55 before YRT took over operations in 2001. This route had 3 branches: 55A which ran along Davis Drive, 55B which operated along Gorham and Eagle Streets, and 55C which operated along Mulock Drive. All 3 branches ran between the Newmarket GO Bus Terminal and 404 Town Centre. On Sundays, buses ran interlined on the 3 branches to form two routes: 55A/55B Davis/Gorham/Eagle, and 55A/55C Davis/Mulock.

  • May 12, 2002 - New two-way Sunday service begins with the introduction of westbound service to Newmarket GO Bus Terminal (formerly eastbound only service). Buses operate eastbound on 55A, then westbound on their respective branch.
  • September 3, 2002 - The route's three branches were fully separated into 55 Davis Drive, 56 Gorham-Eagle, and 57 Mulock Drive. New expanded rush hour service is introduced with every 2nd bus operating north on Leslie Street from 404 Town Centre to Farr Avenue in the Sharon community (off-peak service was provided by route 57).
  • January 4, 2004 - Peak period service along Leslie Street between 404 Town Centre and Sharon will be served by the new 55A branch. Branch 55 will operate between Newmarket GO Bus Terminal and 404 Town Centre only, thus, requiring a transfer when switching between both branches.
  • September 5, 2004 - Route 55A (to Sharon) was eliminated, replaced by route 58. At the same time, a new route 55B was implemented via Huron Heights and Leslie Valley, replacing the northern portion of route 33.
  • April 2008 - One route 55 trip in each peak period was extended east to the Bales Dr. Industrial Park, east of Highway 404. This replaced the old route 225, which used to operate between 404 Town Centre and the Bales Drive Industrial Park. Route 225 was discontinued in 2007 due to poor ridership performance.
  • August 31, 2008 - Limited service through Upper Canada Mall is modified with weekday rush hour service no longer operating through the mall.
  • February 15, 2009 - Buses no longer operate through Upper Canada Mall after 10pm every day.
  • April 23, 2012 - All day service to Upper Canada Mall on weekends and Holidays is reduced to only serve the mall when it is open. Service on branch 55B was cut from Monday to Saturday service to weekday rush hour service only.
  • December 2012 - Routes 55 and 55B were declared fully accessible.
  • January 3, 2016 - As part of the 2015 Annual Service Plan, service on both branches is extended to serve the Davis Drive & Hwy 404 Carpool Lot mirroring the Viva Yellow routing. Buses will no longer operate through or loop within the 404 Town Centre. Service on branch 55 is eliminated during weekday rush hours with all service operating on branch 55B.
  • February 14, 2016 - Service on branch 55 is changed to have it once again terminate in the east within the 404 Town Centre shopping centre, no longer operating to the Davis Drive/Highway 404 Carpool Lot. Branch 55B is unchanged and continues to operate to the carpool lot.
  • June 26, 2016 - Limited service to Bales Drive is discontinued due to low ridership. All peak-period service on branch 55B now terminates at the Davis Drive and Highway 404 Carpool Lot.
  • April 5, 2020 - Branch 55 (Newmarket Terminal - 404 Town Centre) is eliminated. Peak-period branch 55B is redesignated 55 and is modified to operate via 404 Town Centre. All off-peak service is discontinued due to low ridership and the duplication of service with Viva Yellow.
