York Region Transit route 87 'Major Mackenzie'
87 Major Mackenzie was a base route operated by YRT in Richmond Hill and Markham ON.
Basic
This route had 1 branch:
- 87 Don Head Village - Woodbine (Rush Hours Only)
This route mainly served Major Mackenzie Drive, between Don Head Village (near Bathurst Street) and Woodbine and Hillmount.
87 existed before VIVA existed, however it would have connected at Major Mackenzie/Yonge.
History
Richmond Hill Transit originally operated route 7, which was the original Major Mackenzie route in Richmond Hill. YRT inherited the service in 2001, and in September they renumbered it to route 87.
This route initially operated during rush hours only, as there was limited development on Major Mackenzie Drive east of Yonge Street. Vaughan Transit also operated route 4 Major Mackenzie between Jane Street and the Bayview Bus Loop inside Wal-Mart.
The two routes were combined in May 2002. Full service ran between Jane and Woodbine, while the 4A branch was implemented to provide extra service between Don Head and Bayview, providing a similar frequency to the old arrangement.
The number 87 was reused in September 2002 for the revised 82A Langstaff Local route, now 87 Langstaff-Maple.
