Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, known as AC Transit provides public transportation in Alameda County and Contra Costa County in the Bay Area in California. Connections are available with BART, San Francisco MUNI, WestCAT, Union City Transit, San Mateo County Transit District, and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

History

  • Alameda and Contra Costa counties voted to establish the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District in November, 1956. [1]
  • The AC Transit District purchased the majority of Key System Transit Lines fleet and property, and continued operation of the majority of local and transbay lines (some of which are still in operation today).
  • Operations under AC Transit began 10/1/1960
  • 1974 - Fremont, Newark, and Concord Service begins
  • 2002 - New Logo and livery
  • Start of line 72R - 2003
  • August 2020 - Start of TEMPO BRT service between Uptown Oakland and San Leandro BART

  • 306 transferred to County Connection 9901 for usage as a training bus in the early 1980's.[27][28][29] It retired at County Connection around the late 1980's and was bought by private owner Ron Hook. It was then repainted back into the AC Transit paint scheme. He scrapped it in the late 2000's due to a major engine issue. A salvage record was noted.
  • 311 was modified with newer headlights, newer windows and a Cummins L10 engine. It survives in Williams, CA, but its Cummins L10 was replaced with a 6V71N.
  • 1 unit (between 300-364) was bought by a private owner at an unknown location for an RV conversion, but was destroyed in the Santa Rosa wildfire in October 2017.[30]

  • 705 is preserved by a private owner.
  • 707 went to Williams, CA, but was totaled & scrapped.
  • 708 was bought by Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service. It was scrapped in early 2015.[40]
  • 711 was spotted on craigslist in Anchorage, AK in June 2016.[41]
  • 712 became a Dial-A-Ride bus. It was later bought by Eastshore lines and ended up in Williams, CA where it remains today.

It was acquired by Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service in September 2017 and is currently undergoing repairs.

  • 815 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA.[42] It was listed on ebay in May 2007.[25] It eventually sold to a private owner in Reno, NV.
  • 817 is preserved by a private owner in the New York area. It may have been originally purchased by Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service from auction.
  • 819 to Eastshore Lines (retained the AC Transit paint scheme). It is currently in Williams, CA and is used as a parts & storage bus.
  • 834 was spotted in a yard in Seattle, WA with some Gray Line of Seattle buses on 1/27/1993. Its powertrain was removed.[43]
  • 839 was bought by private owner Ron Hook. It was traded to AC Transit for bus 2098 in the early 2000's and was kept on the property until circa 2013. It was then scrapped.
  • 844 lost brakes and rear ended 949 on 2/27/1987. Both buses were retired afterward.
  • 864 was bought by private owner Ron Hook.
  • 1 unit was bought by a private owner and converted into an RV. It was listed on Craigslist in Nicholas, CA on 5/26/2018.[44]

  • 949 was rear ended by 844 on 2/27/1987. Both buses were retired afterward. 949 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA. He cut out the front shell & had it for sale on his property in Perris.
  • 965 was bought by private owner Ron Hook.[46]
    • It was sold to Line 51 Brewing Company in Oakland, CA in early 2020. It was converted into a static beer tapper.[47]
  • 969 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA.[48] It was eventually sold to a private owner.

  • 1097-1099 & 1150 were used for BART Express service until circa 1990.

  • Ex-SCCTD 2502 was damaged in an accident when being delivered to AC Transit on 6/2/1988. As a result, it was never renumbered to 1713 or repainted into the AC Transit livery. It was used for parts.[57]
  • 1701 was damaged in an accident on 9/8/1993 and retired.[58]
  • Retired in 1989-1996.

  • Some units were bought by Zacher's Auto Salvage in Harbor City, CA.
    • 3 units (including 1825) were sold to Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service. Later they were sold to Frank's All City Lines. Eventually they were all more than likely scrapped.[59]
  • Many units were bought by Transit Sales International.
    • Several units were sold to Schlitterbahn Waterparks in New Braunfels, TX. Some retained their original fleet numbers. Notable units spotted throughout 2011-2018: 1801, 1802, 1803, 1804, 1806, 1819, 1821, 1822, 1826 and a few other units.[60][61]
    • 1810 was spotted intact in 2011.[62]
    • 1812 was sold and spotted at Autobus Dupont in Quebec, Canada in June 2006.[63]
    • 1816 & 1823 were spotted intact on 6/10/2015.[64] They were finally moved off of the property by summer 2018 and were likely scrapped.
