The Line 11 – Vaudreuil-Hudson line (formerly exo1) is a commuter rail line between Montreal and the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion, with an additional daily return trip to the city of Hudson. The trip from Lucien-L’Allier station to Vaudreuil station takes approximately 1 hour, with an additional 10 to 15 minutes for Hudson[1]. The made of Bombardier ALP-45 DP or GMDD F59PH/F59PHI locomotives hauling Bombardier Multilevel cars, running in push-pull mode with the locomotive facing west (Vaudreuil-Hudson). The trains are stored overnight at the Vaudreuil yard, shortly after Vaudreuil station. Heavy maintenance and day storage are done at Lachine Maintenance Centre, between Montréal-Ouest and Lachine stations[2].
The line operates over the entire Canadian Pacific Railway Westmount subdivision (from Lucien-L’Allier to Montréal-Ouest) and Vaudreuil subdivision (until Dorion station). Trains then travel on exo M&O subdivision to Vaudreuil and Hudson.[3]
History
The line dates to 1887 when the “CP Lakeshore West” line started, connecting Rigaud and Montréal Windsor station (via Vaudreuil). The Canadian National Railway also had a competing service, the “CN Lakeshore West”, to Vaudreuil, until 1960. The line was managed directly by the Canadian Pacific until 1982 when the Commission de transport de la Communauté Urbaine de Montréal (CTCUM) took over management from the CP, along with the Deux-Montagnes line from the CN (the only other commuter rail line in the region at that time).[4] However, the CP still continued to provide train crew and maintenance of the trains. In 1985, the CTCUM became the Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM). The current stations were built or renovated in the 1980s.
In 1995, the newly created Agence Métropolitaine de Transport took over operation of the line. AMT ended service to Rigaud in 2010.
The AMT was abolished in June 2017 and was replaced by the exo - Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM). Shortly after, in July, Bombardier Transport took over the operation and maintenance of the trains, along with all CP and CN lines.
The older fare zone system (1 through 8) were replaced by a simpler fare zone system consisting of zones A through D.[5] The line is now within zones A and C.
Projects
Despite the construction of the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue branch of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) which will compete with the line, exo sees a lot of potential for the line. The director general of exo, Sylvain Yelle, recognizes that "the line is slow", with its numerous stops. Currently, the only express trains run reverse-peak. exo wants to change that, with more trains. However, the current tracks belong to Canadian Pacific, which blocks plans. If VIA Rail Canada high-frequency train project goes ahead, trains could use the new corridor.[6]
Vaudreuil Station
This station was the first of the network to be completely renovated and upgraded under the direction of exo. The new station features two train platforms with one track (doors open on both sides), 826 parking space (from 596), a new bus terminal with 14 platforms (from 8) and a customer service centre. Construction started in June 2019 and should end in 2020. [7]
Vendôme Station
The station is ongoing major renovations, with the Metro station of the same name. Brand new platforms are being built along with a new tunnel that will link a new entrance building for the Metro and the newly built McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Construction started in 2017 and should end in 2020. [8]
Montréal-Ouest Station
With the station's current design, there are several safety issues for users, given its position between two streets. To remedy the situation, exo wishes to build a new platform to the north, extend the pedestrian tunnel to Sherbrooke Street with a new entrance and close the west access from Westminster Avenue. A new temporary was built in 2019. [9]
Lucien-L’Allier station
The current station opened in 1993 as a replacement of the Windsor station, no longer accessible with the construction of Bell Centre. The infrastructure as now reached the end of its useful life and will have to be renovated over the next few years, with accessibility and technological updates. There is no timeline for this project so far. [9]
