The Alexander Dennis Enviro200EV is the battery-electric version of the Enviro200. BYD Auto, a leading manufacturer of electric buses, partnered with Alexander Dennis in 2015 to supply the chassis for the bus. Go-Ahead London was the launch customer and has taken delivery of 51 buses beginning in 2016.[1]

Design

The Enviro200EV was launched as a 12-metre bus and was built on a BYD chassis known as the D9UR. In July 2016, Alexander Dennis announced that a 10.8-metre version would be available and make its debut at the CENEX Low Carbon Vehicle event. It was scheduled to go into production in early 2017.[2] The Enviro200EV uses BYD's irion phosphate batteries, which are stored on the roof near the front as well as behind the last row of passenger seats. Two in-wheel electric motors are located on the rear axle. The bus had a range of approximately 150 miles.

In May 2019, Alexander Dennis announced that two new lengths would be available: 9.6 and 10.2 metres. Four months later, they announced that through optimizing the vehicle layout and maximizing the available space, a 10.9 metre length would replace the 10.8 metre length, and a 11.6 metre length would replace the 12 metre length.[3] By 2020, the Enviro200EV was being advertised with a range of 160 miles.

The updated Enviro200EV uses an all-electric heating system. A heat pump transfers atmospheric heat in to the vehicle. It can also be used in reverse to cool the vehicle.[3] The roofline was redesigned with a smoother, more integrated appearance.

Enviro200EV XLB

In August 2021, Alexander Dennis delivered their first 12.6m long Enviro200EV. Designed with three axles, it can qualify for reduced Road User Charges in New Zealand thanks to lower axle loads. Like other Alexander Dennis buses for New Zealand, the Enviro200EV XLB is built by partner Kiwi Bus Builders.[4]
