Ameritrans Bus, Inc. was a manufacturer of cutaway buses based in Elkhart, Indiana.
Production of Ameritrans buses ended in 2016, after being sold by ABC Companies.
History
Founding & Growth
Founded in 1998, Ameritrans was owned by TMC Group, a manufacturer of specialty vehicles. Ameritrans by TMC Group Inc. produced vehicles at their Parkview Avenue facility until 2004, when operations were moved to the Ada Drive facility. Ameritrans buses would continue to be built at this plant until its closure in 2016.
ABC Ownership & Alexander Dennis
In August 2012, the assets of TMC Group, Inc. and the Ameritrans brand were acquired by ABC Companies, who rebranded the company to Ameritrans Bus, Inc. and inheriting its roughly 75 employees. Under the ownership of ABC, the company expanded operations in September 2014, moving some production to ABC's own Nappanee, Indiana production site,[1] the closure of which had been previously announced earlier in the year.[2] The Nappanee facility had previously been set up to overhaul buses for Greyhound beginning in 2010, overhauling 750 buses over the lifetime of the contract.[3]
Ameritrans, now operating out of the Nappanee facility, contractually produced Buy America-compliant buses for Alexander Dennis.[3]
Closure
In July 2016, ABC announced the sale of assets of Ameritrans Bus.[4] Ownership of the Ameritrans brand was transferred to Davey Coach Sales, Inc. who continue to maintain a parts network for owners of Ameritrans buses. Alexander Dennis gained full ownership of the former Ameritrans Nappanee facility[5] and continued operations until its closure May 6, 2022.[6]
