Beaver Bus Lines Limited (formerly Fairway Coach Lines Inc.)
|
Beaver Bus Lines is a regional intercity bus company operating in the Province of Manitoba and is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The company offers current model MCI and Prevost coaches for charter and tours to any destination in Canada and the United States.
History
Founded in 1932 by Harry Henteleff, the company first began as the St. Vital Bus Line operating a connector bus service from the end of the Winnipeg Electric Company streetcar line at St. Mary’s Road & Berrydale to the newly constructed St. Boniface Sanitorium and finishing at the Todd Post Office in south St. Vital, Manitoba.
During the 1930s and following a series of early successes with “Safety Freight Lines” in the then newly emerging trucking industry, Henteleff was persuaded by a group of residents from the Town of Stonewall to apply for an operating authority to offer intercity bus service as a replacement for the discontinued interurban rail service. In 1939 the province approved his application for the Winnipeg-Stonewall route, and he quickly amalgamated his two bus routes under the brand of Beaver Bus Lines Limited. Shortly after that he continued the growth of his company by offering bus service from Winnipeg to the towns of St. Adolphe and Niverville.
Expansion came yet again in 1948, marking the company’s largest growth since the previous decade. Henteleff and his company acquired the robust commuter bus route operating between the cities of Winnipeg and Selkirk from the Winnipeg Electric Company. Immediately after this acquisition, the company quickly shed its interest in all other routes in order to focus service on the busy Selkirk corridor.
In 1972, Beaver Bus Lines, including its Winnipeg-Selkirk commuter route, all equipment and its charter service authority, were sold to Winnipeg-based businessman John Fehr Sr. Over time and under the stewardship of the Fehr family, Beaver Bus Lines holdings grew to include other bus properties such as Eagle Bus Lines, Fairway Coach Lines, Webb Bus Lines, Moose Jaw Coach Lines and Moose Mountain Bus Lines.
Due to declining ridership, Beaver Bus Lines discontinued its operation of the commuter service between the cities of Winnipeg and Selkirk as of Friday, July 1, 2016.
Today, Beaver Bus Lines continues to offer chartered services to anywhere in North America from its home base in Winnipeg.
