The Bombardier M7 is type of electric multiple unit (EMU) manufactured for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Commuter Railroad. The cars began production in 2002 and replaced the Budd M1 cars which entered service at the end of the 1960s.



The Metropolitan Transportation Authority awarded the contract to manufacture 192 M7 cars to Bombardier Transportation in May 1999.[1] By July 2005, multiple options increased the number of cars produced to 836 cars for the Long Island Rail Road and 336 cars for the Metro-North Commuter Railroad. A total of 1,172 cars were produced at a value of approximately $2.5 billion US.[2]


The stainless steel carbodies flare outwards below the window line like the Budd cars, however the M7 cars have flatter ends. Each car has four 200 kilowatt asynchronous AC traction motors fed by IGBT inverters. Power is picked up via a third rail. The M7 cars can travel faster and accelerate faster than previous EMUs. Each M7 car has two large, single leaf doors per side.

Inside, passenger seats with improved ergonomics are placed in a 2+3 arrangement. Cars built for the Long Island Rail Road have the seats facing the centre of the car, while those built for the Metro-North Commuter Railroad face the ends. A space for wheelchairs is available near each end of the car. "B" cars are fitted with an accessible lavatory. Other interior amenities include automated station announcements and on-board pay telephones.[3]
