Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was a Canadian Class I railroad providing intermodal and freight services in Canada and the USA. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, the Canadian Pacific Railway owned 30,421 kilometers (18,903 mi) of track spanning across six Canadian provinces and 10 states.

History

The Canadian Pacific Railway was incorporated on February 16, 1881 as The Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Under the railway company, Canada's first transcontinental railway was to be built between eastern Canada and British Columbia. This was to fulfill a promise made by the Canadian government to British Columbia that a railway would be built connecting the province to central Canada when it joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871.[1] Building the transcontinental railway took over four years with construction occurring from several fronts: westward from the eastern end at North Bay, eastward from the western end at Port Moody, at various places along the north shores of Lake Superior, and westward from Winnipeg.[2]

The Last Spike

On November 7, 1885, the eastern and western portions of the Canadian Pacific transcontinental railway met at Craigellachie, British Columbia, a remote location in the Rocky Mountains where Donald A. Smith drove the last spike. The first transcontinental train left Montréal Dalhousie Station on June 28, 1886 and arrived in Port Moody, British Columbia on July 4, 1886.

Merger with KCS

On March 21, 2021, CP announced a proposal to purchase fellow Class I railroad Kansas City Southern Railway for $29 billion USD. The combined company would become the first railroad serving Canada, Mexico, and the United States. A counterbid by competitor CN for $33.7 billion USD was proposed; however, it was rejected by federal regulators, and a final offer of $31 billion USD from CP was accepted by KCS. Final approval of the merger was received on March 15, 2023, with the two companies officially merging on April 14, 2023 to become Canadian Pacific Kansas City.
