The Coopérative de transport Maritime et Aérien, abbreviated CTMA, is a cooperative providing ferry service to the Magdalen Islands, QC.
History
CTMA was formed as a cooperative by Magdalen Island residents on May 28, 1944, in order to provide regular transportation access to the mainland. The cooperative originally intended to provide both ferry and air service; however, the latter never materialized.[1]
During the initial years, the priority for CTMA was carrying freight (mostly fish) from the Magdalen Islands to major cities such as Halifax, Matane, Montreal, and Quebec City, and shipping goods and supplies to the Island. In 1971, the purchase of the Manic enabled the first roll-on/roll-off service to the Island from Souris, PEI; this launched a tourist boom.[2] Cruise service from Montreal began in 2002.
