GO Transit GP40TC 9805

GO Transit 500-507 were GMDD GP40TC's were built in 1966 specifically for the Government of Ontario's new GO Transit commuter operation in the Toronto area. They are based on parent EMD's GP40 freight model, but with a built-in Head End Power generator for supplying electricity to passenger cars.

The units were unlike any other GP40 ever built: they were considerably longer, as they needed to be built on the frames of SD40's to allow enough room for the EMD 12V-149 HEP engine and generator. As well, they featured far shorter noses, only about 60 inches versus the 81 inch long nose that was then standard on all EMD locomotives.

All were built at the GMDD plant in London, Ontario in late 1966. Because they were delivered well in advance of the beginning of service, units 601-607 were delivered in a solid dark blue scheme with a small CN "Noodle" logo on the cab sides. They operated in freight service on CN for several months in the winter of 1966-1967, and were released by CN back to GMD by the end of March 1967 for modifications in preparation for the new GO Transit service, including installation of HEP generators and a repainting into full GO Transit colours (featuring a white cab and large green GO logos on the long hood).

Unit 600, outshopped last in December 1966, was not used in CN freight service. It was delivered in full GO livery and used for familiarization and testing. It was noted in the Thunder Bay area being used in test service with new GO single level coaches from Hawker Siddeley's plant in Fort William (Thunder Bay) over CN's Kinghorn Sub in mid-March 1967, running between Fort William and Longlac.

The units were delivered with 600 series roadnumbers, renumbered as 9800's in 1970 (retaining these numbers when repainted into the green/white livery when rebuilt in early/mid 1975), and renumbered again in late 1975 into the 500 series, which they held until sale to Amtrak.

A number of modifications were made to the units over their time with GO. In 1975 the rear HEP end was rebuilt, and extended all the way to the rear with no anticlimber and no way to walk around the end. Sometime in 1980-86 a rear anticlimber was added. Incidentally under Amtrak ownership, the long hood was rebuilt and shortened again.

With delivery of the new F59PH units to GO Transit starting in the late 1980's, GO Transit began retiring and selling off its older power. The first F59PH order (GO 520-535) resulted in all eight of the GP40TC units being retired and sold to Amtrak in 1988, becoming 192-199. Later they were rebuilt to GP38-3 standards and renumbered 520-527, and continue in service today.
