GO Transit Series VI Bilevel cars

GO Transit 2500-2521 are Bombardier Bilevel coaches built in 2002. They are known as the Series VI Bilevel cars.

These are the first order of cars that were built as accessible. They have allowed GO to begin to convert all of the 2300-series
cars back to non-accessible cars (all are now converted). The original order was for 16 cars, although an option for another 6 cars was taken prior to the first car being built.

This series of cars was the first ordered by GO of the second-generation BiLevel design, of which 2499 was a prototype. Thery were also the first new cars ordered in 12 years. They have a number of improvements over the older cars, such as a larger accessible washroom on the first level of the car, welded aluminum exterior and more easily accessible HVAC and doorway equipment. GO ordered them with a number of additional options, such as exterior step lights, operators control at one of the doorways, and larger windows in the side doors.

These cars also featured a new style interior. Side walls are light grey with end and bulkhead walls in a multi-toned grey mottled pattern. Seats are upholstered in a blue fabric with small light blue and yellow stitches. The head rest is in light blue vinyl and wraps over the top of seats that are back-to-back. These cars were also the first, and thus far only, to be delivered as built with power outlets and tables (in light blue). The tables were removed in 2004 as a number of studies had shown that they may increase injuries in the event of an accident.

The Bilevel design (as it is now known) was arrived at expressly at GO Transit's behest. In the early 1970's, GO quickly found out that the single-level cars then being used were simply not able to provide the capacity required within the track time that they were allotted by CN. After tests with leased "Gallery-style" equipment from C&NW and later CPR, it was decided that an entirely new car style would be the best way to attack the problem.

Refurbishment

Beginning in 2019, the Series VI Bilevel cars were refurbished by CAD Railway Services. Refurbished coaches have the following features added:

  • New Kiel Match seats on the upper and intermediate levels
  • Reupholstered seats on the lower level in the current green fabric
  • LED interior lighting
  • Light brown wood-look end walls with inter-car doors in flat grey
  • New floors and carpeting
  • Interior next-stop screens
