Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority 1401-1404 are Vossloh-Kiepe-Gillig BRT ETB 40' dual-mode trolleybuses built in 2014.

History

Order

The RTA decided to conduct a trial to test new technologies for their next generation of trolleybus. Four buses were to be procured, which would replace the ETI 14TrE trolleybuses purchased in the 1990's.

The contract for these buses was awarded to Vossloh Kiepe, who managed the project, in 2013. The buses were supplied by Gillig using the BRT CNG model as a glider. Modifications and integration of the buses' systems were carried out by Complete Coach Works. The four prototypes were funded in part with a federal grant of $4 million. The initial order came with an option to purchase up to 75 additional units.

As part of the trial, the RTA is evaluating two systems for off-wire operation. In addition to their electric traction motors, 1401-1402 are equipped with a Cummins ISB6.7 diesel engine powering a generator which provides electricity to the traction motor when running off wire. 1403-1404 are instead equipped with lithium titanate batteries.
