Route Diagram

66X Northgate / Roosevelt / Downtown Seattle was a bus route operated by King County Metro in Seattle, Washington State, that ran along the route 67 to the U-District, then ran an express service from there to Downtown Seattle.

Route Details

This route served local stops along the corridor with the 67, which, before 2016, traveled from Northgate, down 5th Ave NE, NE 80th St, then either Roosevelt Way NE southbound or 11th and 12th Ave NE northbound.

From there, the route began its express service down the corridor of Eastlake Ave E, and towards 3rd Ave via Stewart and Olive Way. The routing towards the "ferry terminal" down 1st Ave has changed over the years,[1] but the latest version had the route originating on Jackson St, terminating on 2nd and Jackson, and travelling down 1st Ave, Seneca and Madison streets towards 3rd Ave.

The route ran a slightly larger service span than the 67 during its life, beginning service from 5-6 AM and ending from 12-1 AM.[2]

Route History

Route 66 was created in June 1997 as a replacement for the Northgate/Roosevelt/U-District parts of the old routes 302 and 305, the former being shortened to Northgate and the latter being deleted. [3] Route 67 already existed, but the combination for frequent service has been coordinated since the beginning of the 66.[4]

The 66 has always had a terminal near the waterfront area on 1st Ave, but the exact routing has changed many times. The "ferry terminal" sign displayed after a southbound 66 coach entered the Downtown area.

The route lasted with peak frequent service and half-hourly all day and weekend service until a restructure in March 2016, with the opening of the University of Washington Link station.[5] The coverage on 5th Ave NE just south of Northgate was replaced by peak only 63X, and the 67 was shifted to use Roosevelt Way between Northgate and Maple Leaf, which replaced the deleted part of the 68 north of 75th St.
