Kingston Transit route 4 is an accessible route operated by Kingston Transit in the city of Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Route Details

Route 4 travels along Princess Street between the Downtown Transfer Point in the heart of Kingston and the Cataraqui Town Centre. It leaves Princess Street briefly to service the Kingston Centre transfer point located at the intersection of Bath Road. In the downtown core, where Princess Street is one-way eastbound, Route 4 travels along Brock Street westbound.

Route 4 provides local service along Princess Street. It is complemented by routes 501 and 502 which provide limited stop express service along Princess Street. The 501/502 provide faster service by skipping many less important stops, with a 22 minute trip between the downtown and the Cataraqui Town Centre, as opposed to the 30 minute trip on route 4.

Schedule

The route runs from 6:15am to 9:45pm Monday to Saturday, and from 8:45am to 8:45pm on Sundays. It has a 30 minute frequency on Monday-Saturday prior to about 7pm, at which point it drops to 60 minute frequency. It also runs at 60 minute frequency on Sundays.

Extra buses are run southbound from Kingston Centre to Downtown hourly, departing at the 15-minute mark.

The scheduled travel time is 30 minutes from end to end--15 minutes from Downtown to the Kingston Centre, and then 15 minutes from the Kingston Centre to the Cataraqui Town Centre.

In most time periods, trips of the 501/502 and trips of the 4 alternate, providing combined 15 minute service between the two of them.

History

Route 4 was originally a weekdays-only route, complementing service provided by 1. With the September 2013 service changes that replaced route 1 service on Princess Street with express routes 501 and 502, route 4 was re-structured to provide service 7 days a week.

September 2015 saw the introduction of extra southbound trips from Kingston Centre to Downtown. These trips depart hourly, and upon arrival at Downtown, change to a route 12 trip to Kingston Centre, providing a clockwise loop route through downtown Kingston.

Extra Sunday trips between Kingston Centre and Downtown were discontinued following a frequency increase on route 12 to 30 minutes at all times.

Vehicles

Route 4 is primarily a 40ft route, and uses New Flyer D40LF/D40LFR, New Flyer XD40, and Nova LFS.
