History
LA Metro's third mass order of Neoplan CNG buses began with the board awarding a contract for 250 buses with the additional 50-150 buses in late June 1996. Units 6551-6600 were part of the procurement of 50 additional CNG buses at a unit price of $324,600 each, disregarding the cost for taxes or spare parts.[1][2] The very first unit from this series was built with a short-lived specialized front end featuring a triple-headlight setup, which had to be swapped out with the normal variant due to the front access panels being forced open under certain braking conditions during pre-service testing.[3]
They replaced some of the 1980-1981 GMC RTS-04 diesels that began retirement since 1992, alongside a few 1983-1984 Neoplan diesels and anything before retirement age damaged beyond repair. The buses ran at LACMTA divisions 2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 15, and 18.
All units were initially delivered with the Metro Bus Yellowjacket paintscheme; they later received the Metro Local livery in 2003-2006.
Some units were re-powered with a rebuilt Cummins L10G CNG engine in 2010-early 2011.[4] The entire series was replaced by the 2010-2012 NABI Metro 45C buses (8401-8491 and 8500-8649); the first nine of these units were retired and auctioned off in 2010 with the rest retired later in 2011-2012 with the last six remaining retired units found at Division 3. In February 2013, a small number of these buses remained at Division 12 to be auctioned off later.
