History
LA Metro's last Neoplan buses were exercised as an option order in December 1998 which began production in January 1999; the buses were delivered in April-August 1999 with entry of service within the following month.[1]
They initially had the Metro Bus 'yellowjacket' paint scheme at the time of delivery and were later repainted in 2003-2008. Only one unit from this series received the later revision of the Metro Local livery at the time of retirement. All units were initially built with Detroit Diesel Series 50G engines. In mid-2001, the Detroit Diesel company announced a system-wide effort to tweak the original engines with upgraded components due to a widespread turbocharger failure found on this series, early NABI buses, alongside the high-floor and low-floor New Flyer buses.[2] The early repowers in 2006-2007 were done with the Cummins Westport L Gas Plus engine, which included: 6700-6701, 6704, 6706-6707, 6709, 6715, 6720, 6724, 6730, 6732, 6734, 6739, 6742, 6744, 6747, 6749, 6751, 6756, 6761, 6763, 6768, 6772, 6774, 6778, 6784-6785, 6788, 6794, and 6797-6799. In March 2007, the board permitted the purchase of 400 new Cummins-Westport engines to replace the original DDC engines found on the remaining nonrepowered 1999 Neoplan CNG buses, 1998-1999 New Flyer high-floor CNG buses and 2000-2001 New Flyer low-floor CNG buses, in response to the discontinuation of the Series 50 engine in late 2005. Units that were repowered with Cummins Westport ISL G engines included: 6702-6703, 6705, 6712, 6716, 6722, 6725, 6728-6729, 6731, 6735, 6737, 6741, 6743, 6750, 6752-6755, 6758-6760, 6762, 6766-6767, 6771, 6773, 6776, 6780, 6782-6783, 6789-6790, and 6792-6793. They featured a small, angled exhaust pipe found on repowered New Flyer and NABI CNG buses.[3]
All units were delivered and operated at Division 3 from the beginning until retirement in 2011-2013.
