History

In October 1998, the LA Metro board of directors approved an order of 215 NABI low-floor CNG buses, with the frames made in Budapest, Hungary followed by the final assembly in Anniston, Alabama. The preproduction unit, 7000 (built in mid-1999), was displayed in Los Angeles in July 1999 and again 4-5 months later; it was returned to the manufacturer at the end of that year as a 'first article' for producing the other 214 units in the order. They were delivered in late January to July 2000, over a year prior to the required final bus delivery in the contract. An additional option for 215 NABI buses was made in early 2000 which became 7300-7514.[1]

They originally had the Metro Bus 'yellowjacket' (7000-7002, 7112-7214) and original Metro Rapid paint schemes (7013-7100) at the time of delivery; the buses first entered service in June 2000. In 2003-2013, all units were repainted to either the Metro Local, Express, or Rapid paint schemes. This series was notable for having the first bus repainted to the Metro Express livery while being the last to remain in the Metro Bus 'yellowjacket' livery. At the beginning of their service lives, 7003-7012 had an all-white 'ghost' livery with the original Metro logo for use on both regular and Rapid routes, while 7101-7111 had an all-white Metro Rapid paint scheme. They operated at LACMTA divisions 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, and 15. Some buses were operated by private contractors for LACMTA, Southland Transit (STI) and Transdev. Select units from this series were repowered with Cummins Westport CNG engines circa 2009-2011.

Almost all units from this series were replaced with the 2013-2015 New Flyer Xcelsior buses (5600-6149 and 3850-4199) once their CNG tanks expired in October 2014. The last remaining units, 7011, 7013, 7016-7018 were retanked and used as OCI training buses, later to be replaced with the 2018-2020 ENC Axess CNG buses (1505-1799).
