Maple Grove Transit is a transit agency that provides fixed-route and dial-a-ride service in the cities of Maple Grove and Osseo, Minnesota, about 13 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Overview and History
Suburban Twin Cities communities were frustrated at the lack of transit they received for paying into the regional transit system. They successfully lobbied the Minnesota state legislature to pass legislation to allow communities to retain 90% of the property taxes they collected to provide their own transit service. One of these agencies, Maple Grove Transit, was established in 1990.
In 1991, the city of Maple Grove contracted fixed-route operations to Metro Transit, who continues to operate the service today out of their MJ Ruter garage in Brooklyn Center. Dial-a-ride service is provided by Midwest Paratransit.
The agency has historically operated six express routes with service to downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota from five park-and-ride locations, as well as two local routes for midday return and feeder service. All of the routes, except Route 781, was suspended because of the pandemic. Route 789, which serves the University of Minnesota, was restored in August 2021.
