The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, commonly referred to as the MTA, is a public benefit corporation and is the parent organization and provides oversight to a number of public transit agencies serving southeastern New York state, most importantly, the New York City Metropolitan Area. Providing service to a vast urbanized region consisting of many millions of residents, the MTA transit network is North America's largest.

The MTA provides transportation service in a variety of modes, listed below:

Governance

The MTA Board is comprised of twenty-three members, of which include different mayors of larger cities served by MTA, county commissioners, varied union members (non-voting) and members installed by the Governor of New York State. Of the board members, seventeen carry voting privileges, of which four (the representatives from Dutchess, Orange, Putnam and Rockland County) carry one collective vote among themselves.
