Metropolitan Transportation Authority 0011-0015
Metropolitan Transportation Authority 0011-0015 were 2017 New Flyer XE40 buses. They are among MTA's first all-electric buses.
On July 26, 2017, the MTA Board approved a contract to lease these all-electric buses built to their specifications, including one in-depot charging station and two en-route charging stations, at an estimated cost of US$4.9 million.[1] They are part of a three-year pilot program to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions as well as modernizing their bus fleet.
On January 9, 2018, the MTA had deployed the first of five buses to passenger service on route M42. As the other four buses arrived, some would eventually see passenger service on route M50. They will be tested and evaluated on their performance from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2020 and will serve as pilots for an upcoming contract order of 45 40-foot all-electric buses planned for approval by the MTA in the fourth quarter of 2019.[2][3]
Originally, they were intended to be used only on the M42 and M50 crosstown routes and still generally run on those two. However, they do appear on other Michael J Quill routes semi-regularly, most notably the M66. Plans to trade the XE40s for Proterras from Grand Avenue Depot at the 1.5 year mark of the 3 year lease were scuttled.
In 2021, the lease for these buses was extended for one more year, but the buses were promptly returned in mid July 2021.
These buses were presented in a unique wave livery in blue, gold and white with "ELECTRICBUS" and "clean-energy bus" markings. They also include the latest passenger amenities of onboard Wi-Fi and USB charging ports.
