Metropolitan Transportation Authority 3500-3599, 6690-6789
Metropolitan Transportation Authority 3500-3599, 6690-6789 were 2006 OBI Orion VII HEV (07.501) buses. 3500-3599 were operated by MTA Bus Company and 6690-6789 were operated by New York City Transit.
3500-3599 were the first local buses purchased new by MTA Bus Company. They replaced many of the GMC RTS buses that MTA Bus inherited from private companies while 6690-6789 retired rebuilt GMC RTS at NYCTA. Due to service reductions related to coronavirus, low reliability, and the impending delivery of replacement hybrid buses in 2021, some buses started being retired in late 2020 with the last unit (3594) being retired in January 2024.
One bus, 3563, has been converted to run on a conventional diesel engine to an automatic transmission by 2013 following a fire. The bus was evaluated in service to determine if it was feasible to convert other hybrid buses at MTA Bus Company. As the hybrids have aged, the expensive hybrid components have experienced a higher failure rate. MTA Bus Company routes also have conditions where the full potential of hybrids is not reached.[1] Ultimately, it was decided against converting the hybrids to diesel buses due to the high cost.
