History
Buses 7090-7365 were part of an original contract for a base order of 690 buses, shared with Nova Bus for 414 LFS buses, that was awarded for New York City Transit in December 2013 and included an available option order of 700 buses.[1] The intent was for these buses to replace the remainder of the 1996 Nova Bus RTS-06s, most of the 1997 and 1998 Nova Bus RTS-06s, and most of the 1998-1999 OBI Orion V buses.
On December 29, 2014, the New York City Transit's Department of Buses has been seeking an approval to amend this contract by increasing the base order to 762 buses and decreasing the option order to 628 buses, along with decreasing a non-awarded contract's base order of 256 articulated buses to 231 and increasing the option order of 275 articulated buses to 300.[2] This is done in order to allocate $42 million from the non-awarded contract's base order to the amended base order of this contract for an additional 72 40-foot buses and completely retire an aging fleet of 1998-1999 Orion V buses due to their excessive structural corrosion condition. The amended contract was approved in the MTA Board Meeting on January 22, 2015.[3]
On March 25, 2015, the MTA had another board meeting to finalize the ratification of a procurement in replacing the 72 Orion V buses by awarding New Flyer to build 72 XD40 buses[4], eventually assigned with the Fleet Numbers 7366-7437. The delivery of these buses began on July 2015 and was completed on November 2015.
Buses 7438-7482 are part of an $80 million contract for MTA Bus Company, alongside the 75 New Flyer XD60 buses numbered 5364-5438. The delivery of these buses started in June 2015 and was completed on August 2015.[5]
7090-7109 and 7140-7149 are 2014 models while the rest are 2015 models.
Bus 7483 was built as the original 7120 and was part of the split contract order of 276 buses. However on May 3, 2015, it was involved in a collision in Pennsylvania while en route to New York City to be delivered.[6] It was transported back to a New Flyer facility and was rebuilt around August 2015. In December 2017, it was renumbered 7483 and delivered to the MTA, however the reason the agency accepted it at the time is unknown.
While all of the buses were delivered in the MTA's traditional blue/white paint scheme, two sets of buses received Select Bus Service (SBS) wraps for a time. The first batch were Flatbush units 7304-7351, receiving an updated two-tone blue version of the SBS wrap for the newly launched B46 SBS service on July 3rd, 2016. They were un-wrapped and re-entered the regular Flatbush Depot pool upon replacement by 7614-7662 in spring 2018.
On September 25th, 2016, LaGuardia Depot's Q70 LTD (Limited) service was rebranded as the Q70 SBS "LGA Link". Buses 7445-7454 were given special teal LGA Link-branded wraps and were equipped with luggage racks and were exclusively used on said route, while 7455 was only given a luggage rack and was intended as a back-up vehicle. In March 2018, the need for more vehicles arose and 7455-7456 were given the LGA Link wrap and luggage racks. With the delivery of 6274-6286 to LaGuardia for the Q70 SBS though in 2020, 7445-7456 were made redundant. Their wraps were removed and luggage racks transferred to their replacements, and they re-entered the regular pool of vehicles. 7445-7456 were the last 40 ft./12 m. buses to be assigned to wear a Select Bus Service wrap.
