History
The Metropolitan Council awarded a contract to MCI in late 2014 for 49 coach buses,[1] with an option to purchase up to an additional 95 buses. With that same item, the council exercised 2 optional units, later increased to 3 units, destined for Shakopee Transit. Purchased with CMAQ funding, these 3 buses, now numbered 4523-4525, never entered service under Shakopee Transit. With delivery scheduled for mid-2015, and the merger of MVTA and BlueXpress[2][3] scheduled to take place on January 1st, 2015, these units were delivered to MVTA and painted in MVTA's livery.
As for 4526-4530, the Metropolitan Council exercised 5 optional units[4] in December, 2014, on behalf of the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority. Utilizing the 2014 contract[1] with MCI, these buses were purchased with an 80%-20% split between Federal CMAQ funds and local match funds, and entered service at the end of 2015 and into early 2016.
