Mississauga Transit 8501 was a Orion 01.508 bus built in 1985. This unit was ordered by the National Research Council for Mississauga Transit as a replacement unit for 8416, which they acquired from Mississauga Transit for flywheel energy storage research in 1984.
It was the first 40' Orion I that Mississauga acquired (the previous 1984 order were 35' units), and was equipped with sliding top windows, dual-stream rear doors, a rear window and no air conditioning. This bus was originally delivered with an Allison MT644 transmission, but later retrofitted with a Voith D863.3.
