The Motor Coach Industries D4000 is an intercity and commuter motorcoach. It was introduced as the 102-D3 and was renamed to follow the naming conventions established with the launch of new coaches in 2001. In 2005, MCI introduced the updated versions of the D4000: the D4000 "Classic" and D4000 "Contemporary". The latter has a revised front fascia and flush-mounted windows.
Variants
An experimental diesel-electric hybrid D4000H version was also produced. Two were delivered to New Jersey Transit (NJT) in 2002 (4004-4005) and two more the following year (4006-4007).
The narrower 96-inch-wide D4000N coach was purchased by NJT and Pace. There were four (7802-7805) and eight coaches (6900-6907), respectively.
Like the 102-D3, the D4000 was available with fluted stainless steel on the lower body. Other options included a wheelchair lift and bi-parting plug-type entrance door.
The D4000 was also the platform for the Inmate Security Transport Vehicle (ISTV) of the early 2000's. The ISTV was only available in 40-foot length.
