The Motor Coach Industries D4005 was launched at the 2005 United Motorcoach Association Expo. Working with BMW's DesignworksUSA, MCI restyled the D coach with a sleeker front and rear design with bonded type passenger windows. Tri-State Tours was the first company to take delivery of MCI's new style D4005.

For coaches meeting the EPA 2007 and 2010 standards, they sport a redesigned rear end incorporating changes to the engine cooling system for each emission standard. Coaches meeting the EPA 2010 standards are also equipped with a selective catalytic reduction system with a 15 gallon diesel exhaust fluid tank.

MCI decided the EPA 2010-compliant D-Series would use the Cummins ISL9 and ISX11.9 engines. As of July 2010, the Detroit Diesel DD13 was under evaluation. All engines are available with the Allison transmission. The ZF transmission will be made available later in 2011.[1]
