The Motor Coach Industries D4505 builds on the D-Series legacy. Working with BMW's DesignworksUSA, the D coach was restyled with a sleeker front and rear design along with flush-mounted passenger windows.

In 2009, MCI customized a D4505 coach for Newton Bus Service with fluted stainless steel sides. Some D4505 coaches have been built with space for a destination sign above the windshield. The area resembles the conventional D-Series but is a little smaller. Another customization that so far has only been seen on a 2008 D4505 for Saskatchewan Transportation Company is a "Classic" D-Series lower front fascia.

Coaches meeting the EPA 2007 and further standards sport a redesigned rear end incorporating changes to the engine cooling system for each emission standard. Coaches meeting the EPA 2010 standards are also equipped with a selective catalytic reduction system that includes a 15 gallon diesel exhaust fluid tank.

Beginning with the 2019 model year. engine and powertrain specs were limited to the Cummins ISX12 diesel engine with engine braking and the Allison B500 transmission. Due to the engine braking the transmission with retarder was no longer offered. In 2020, the diesel engine option was updated to the Cummins X12.
