Neoplan USA AN440

The Neoplan USA AN440 was a 40-foot (12m), high-floor transit bus sold in the United States. The first buses were built for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Between 1982 and 1989, they would amass the largest fleet of AN440 buses.

Design

Three-axle AN440/3 in Los Angeles.

The AN440 used an electrically welded, integral steel structure. Carbon steel was used for the majority with stainless steel used for areas such as the wheel housings, engine bay, and stepwells. The galvanized steel roof and body panels were either welded or adhered to the frame. The front and rear of the bus were moulded from fibreglass.

A three-axle version of the AN440 was available, it was denoted as the AN440/3. These buses, built for the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD), had one door and mainly forward facing seats that were raised towards the rear.

The AN440 is available with two doors. Initially offering plug-type doors, slide glide and flip out doors would later become options. A wheelchair lift could be specified at the front door.

Over the course of production, the appearance of the AN440's front end changed little over time. In the mid-1990s, the rear of the AN440 was revised. The original rear design had more pronounced louvres and an engine door that wrapped around the rear quarters of the bus with the tail lights arranged horizontally over the bumper.
