DE40LF with low profile battery enclosure. |
The New Flyer Industries DE40LF is a hybrid version of the popular D40LF model by New Flyer Industries. Although New Flyer introduced its first diesel-electric hybrid bus in 1998 (originally designated as H40LF), they did not start mass producing them until about 2001.
The first DE40LFs, serials 23422-23423, were delivered to Tri-Met in Portland, OR, USA. They are numbered 2561-2562.
In 2007, New Flyer introduced a restyled low-profile enclosure for the DE40LF/R. Currently, it is featured on SEPTA's DE41LFs, as well as on St. Catharines Transit's DE40LFs (and other DE40LFRs).
After the 2009 model year, New Flyer no longer offers the LF series of buses with the traditional style front and rear ends. In November 2009, New Flyer updated their website and removed the LF models from their lineup. The DE40LF has been replaced by the DE40LFR. Production for some existing orders of the D40LF continued to the end of 2010.
DE41LF
In 2007, some models were given the name DE41LF to reflect added length to the bus with the Cummins ISL engine and Allison parallel hybrid system. However later models were given back the DE40LF designation.
