The New Flyer Industries HE40LF was a hydrogen-electric hybrid version of the popular D40LF model. This bus used a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine and a series hybrid electric drive from ISE Corporation. The engine generates electricity which is stored in ultracapacitors and powers two electric motors that drive the vehicle.
The bus was delivered to SunLine Transit Agency in December 2004. It was sent to Winnipeg for cold weather testing in February and March 2005 before being returned to SunLine for further trials.[1] By the start of 2020, the bus was retired and put up for auction.
