New York Central Railroad
The New York Central Railroad (abbreviated as NYC) is a former Class I railroad, operating between 1853 and 1968. The formation of the company resulted as an amalgamation of a number of New York state operating companies. These companies included: the Albany and Schenectady Railroad; Utica and Schenectady Railroad; Syracuse and Utica Railroad; Rochester and Syracuse Railroad; Buffalo and Rochester Railroad; Schenectady and Troy Railroad; Rochester, Lockport and Niagara Falls Railroad; Mohawk Valley Railroad, and Syracuse and Utica Direct Railroad.
In addition to a varied number of popular passenger rail services, a reputable rail freight service was provided.
In 1968, the railroad was succeeded by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which entered bankruptcy in 1970, surrendering to the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) between 1976 and 1999. Today, areas served by ConRail were split during an acquisition by CSX Corporation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. Today, ConRail continues to do business as an asset management and network services provider, now formally named Conrail Shared Assets Operations.
At its heyday, extensive trackage existed in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and West Virginia plus additional trackage in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Québec. At the end of 1925, the NYC operated 11,584 miles (18,643 km) of road and 26,395 miles (42,479 km) of track; at the end of 1967 the mileages were 9,696 miles (15,604 km) and 18,454 miles (29,699 km).
