History
From the late 1990s to early 2000s, NCTD prioritized the need to replace aging equipment that have surpassed the FTA minimal requirements of 12 years or 500,000 miles. When the 2003 New Flyer C35LF buses were delivered, they issued a request for proposals to buy 23 CNG low-floor buses with an option of 45 additional buses, with ElDorado National, New Flyer of America, North American Bus Industries, and Orion Bus Industries bidding on the order; the determining factors for this order were evaluated on the level of training required of new bus specific subsystems, delivery schedules, fleet consistency, inventory requirements, and price instead of simply having the latter in a bid invitation. New Flyer had the best proposal from them despite Orion being cheaper than the other 3 manufacturers; as a result, the finalized order with the associated equipment was almost $8.8 million.[1]
About 10 months prior to this order was built, the entire existing fleet received the current GFI GenFare boxes to allow future use of Smart Card technology, meaning that the 2300s were the first built with the (at the time) new fareboxes.[2] The buses were delivered in early 2005, replacing all the 1990-1991 Flxible Metro buses and a few of the 1992 Flxible Metros as well. All units were initially painted in the 2000 revision of the NCTD Breeze livery; in 2011, the first 6 units from this series were later repainted in the BREEZE Rapid scheme.
The CNG tanks from this series are set to expire in 2024; one unit retired prematurely due to apparent accident damage while the others were replaced by the 2020-2022 New Flyer Xcelsior CNG and electric buses, leaving eight units remaining in service as of April 2023.
