History
In June 2000, New Flyer was awarded a $10 million contract to build 20 more articulated buses with delivery slated at the end of 2001.[1] Their VINs indicated that they were supposed to be delivered with Detroit Diesel Series 50 EGR engines, but were instead built with Cummins ISL engines. At that time, New Flyer did not introduce the engine code for the Cummins ISL engine until early 2002, starting with the Academy Bus Lines D60LF order. As such, the Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine code ('M') was used likely as a placeholder for the aforementioned Cummins engine.[2]
Unlike the earlier 1999-2000 units, they were built with larger LED rear brake and turn signals with the halogen exterior side and front turn signals being replaced with LEDs as well as having a slightly different rear taillight configuration.
The buses began service at the Irvine Sand Canyon base where they replaced some of the 1980 GMC RTS-03 buses. Early on, they were used on route 1 but were more commonly operated on the 29, 43, 57, 57X, and 60 throughout their existence at OCTA; on rare occasions, these buses would be used on routes 37, 50, and 66. They transferred to Santa Ana Base in late 2006-early 2007 where they would be stationed there for the rest of their service lives. Retirement for this series began in 2014; one unit was retired upon arrival of the 2013 New Flyer XN60 buses (7601-7620) while the rest were replaced by the later 2016 units (7621-7636).
